“What was that all about?” Glass asked. Andrew Stone had only been gone a matter of seconds, but he knew he had to confront his sister before she disappeared into her room; she was already heading for the stairs.
“What was what?”
“Don’t try to act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. What where those moves you were putting on Stone while I was upstairs?”
“I think he just likes my new perfume,” she replied coyly. “Why were you playing me up to him, anyway?”
“Just trying to be nice.”
“You’re never nice without some other motive.” Jade’s eyes narrowed. “What’s going on?”
“I’m just in a good mood today, that’s all. Why should everything I do have some ulterior motive behind it?”
“Because it does. What wretched thing are you going to ask me to do for you now?”
“Nothing, honestly! Unless you want to drop off a package for me at the post office,” Glass grinned.
“Oh hell no. You know my feelings about that place! I don’t deal well with zombies.”
“Oh well; can’t say I didn’t try.”
Jade narrowed her eyes and studied her brother suspiciously.
“What do you really want?”
“I swear; I don’t want anything. You sure are nervous today.”
“If I hadn’t been already, I am now. What are you up to?”
“It’s super-secret, Jadey. Don’t worry; it doesn’t involve you at all.”
“Your side project again?” His sister seemed to relax a little.
“I thought you had to give up on that.”
“Nah, I just had to change my approach for a little while. Things are starting to shift back, but in the mean time, I thought I’d try out a new formula.”
“You have fun with that.”
“Oh, I am. You have no idea how much I love messing with the undead.”
“You always were an overachiever.”
“I believe in aiming high. Anyway, I should get going if I want to get my package in the mail before three.”
Glass picked up a small, brown paper-wrapped box from the entry table before heading out the door, whistling an eerie tune that made the hairs on the back of Jade’s neck stand up. She still wasn’t entirely sure her brother wouldn’t spring some horrible request on her, but in the mean time, she decided to do her best to put it out of her mind.
